Lake Orta and Orta San Giulio
Lake Orta With The Village Of Orta San Giulio, The Monastic Island Of San Giulio, And The UNESCO Listed Sacro Monte Di Orta Above The Village · Orta San Giulio, Piedmont
Lake Orta is the small one on the wrong side of the ridge from Maggiore, and being overlooked is the whole of its character. It is the only large lake in the region that drains north instead of south, it is about thirteen kilometres long, and almost the entire visit is one village and one island. Orta San Giulio is a single street of arcaded houses running down to a square that opens straight onto the water, with no through traffic because the road stops above it. Four hundred metres offshore sits Isola San Giulio, occupied by a Benedictine convent and a basilica with an eleventh-century carved pulpit, and circled by one narrow lane that the nuns have signed with instructions about silence, which people actually obey. Above the village a wooded hill carries a pilgrimage route of twenty chapels. Boats cross to the island continuously in season and hardly at all in winter, when the place nearly closes.
Piazza Motta, Orta San Giulio, Piedmont, 28016, Italy
NO OPENING TIME HERE WAS CHECKED. The structure: the village, Piazza Motta and the Sacro Monte are public and never close, though the wooded hill is unlit after dark. The basilica on the island opens daily with a midday interval and closes for services; the convent is enclosed and not open at all. BOATS ARE THE REAL TIMETABLE, running continuously in season, thinning sharply in the evening and almost stopping from November to March, when much of the village shuts as well. Confirm the last crossing before going over.
