Lake Pend Oreille
Lake · Sandpoint, Idaho
A hundred and forty-eight square miles of water in the far north of Idaho, 1,152 feet deep and the fifth-deepest lake in the United States. That depth is the reason the United States Navy runs an acoustic research station on it at Bayview: the water behaves like the open ocean, and submarine hull designs are tested here at scale, a thousand miles from any sea. Sandpoint sits at the north end with Schweitzer above it, US-95 crosses the water on the Long Bridge, and the mountains come down to the shore almost the whole way round.
Bridge Street, Sandpoint, Idaho, 83864, United States
The lake is open at all times and FREE. Sandpoint City Beach, the town waterfront and the Long Bridge pedestrian span are open year round at no charge; the beach lifeguards are summer season and posted hours only. Public boat launches are generally free or low-cost, and the Idaho state parks around the lake charge a day-use vehicle fee. ⚠ THE LAKE IS DRAWN DOWN FOR FLOOD CONTROL from roughly late autumn into spring, which lowers the water, changes the shoreline and can leave ramps and beaches unusable - check before planning a boat trip outside summer. ⚠ A US NAVY RESEARCH AREA OFF BAYVIEW IS RESTRICTED, MARKED AND ENFORCED. Schweitzer above the town keeps its own winter and summer seasons.
