Lake Pontchartrain Causeway
Longest Continuous Bridge Over Water In The World · Metairie, Louisiana
Twenty-three point eight miles of twin concrete spans straight across Lake Pontchartrain from Metairie to Mandeville — the longest continuous bridge over water in the world, and it has held that record in one form or another since 1956. For about eight miles in the middle there is no land visible in any direction: no shore behind, none ahead, just water to the horizon on both sides and a low grey road running through it. It is a commuter toll bridge that thirty thousand vehicles a day use without thinking about it, and it is an extraordinary thing to drive.
