Lake Roosevelt National Recreation Area
Public Land · Coulee Dam, Washington
The 130-mile reservoir impounded behind Grand Coulee Dam, running north up the Columbia almost to the Canadian border, with over 600 miles of shoreline and more than twenty campgrounds. It is a boating and fishing park rather than a scenic one - the drowned valley is dry country of sagebrush and pine, and the water level moves through the year by as much as eighty feet. Much of the shoreline is co-managed with the Colville and Spokane tribes, whose land it flooded.
1008 Crest Drive, Coulee Dam, Washington, 99116, United States
Open year round, all hours. Campgrounds, boat launches and services are seasonal, with most facilities running roughly May to September and many closed or unserviced in winter. The headquarters is at Coulee Dam. Water levels are drawn down substantially in spring, which closes some launches - check the current lake level before towing a boat.
