Lake Scott State Park and El Cuartelejo

National Historic Landmark · Scott City, Kansas

A spring-fed canyon in the high plains of western Kansas, which is not what the map leads you to expect — bluffs, cottonwoods and a lake in a landscape that is otherwise flat to the horizon. In it stands El Cuartelejo, the northernmost pueblo ruin in the United States: a seven-room stone structure built in the late 1600s by Taos and later Picuris people who walked several hundred miles out of New Mexico to get away from Spanish rule, and lived here among the Plains Apache.

101 West Scott Lake Drive, Scott City, Kansas, 67871, United States

A Kansas state park, open daily year round with a vehicle permit required. El Cuartelejo is within the park, signed and interpreted, and is included in the park entry. Campground and cabins book through Kansas State Parks. The park office keeps daytime hours.
