Lake Superior Water Stays Very Cold And The Weather Turns Quickly. Highway 17 Crosses The Park. · Wawa, Ontario
Lake Superior Provincial Park is a large Ontario Parks wilderness park on the eastern shore of Lake Superior, north of Sault Ste. Marie, with Highway 17 running through it. It holds about 160 km of rocky shoreline, cliffs, cobble and sand beaches, waterfalls and inland lakes, with the visitor centre at Agawa Bay. The Agawa Rock Pictographs are a separate row nearby. It suits campers, hikers, canoeists and road-trippers who want big northern scenery and are fine with cold water, changing weather and few services. Be honest with yourself about the lake: even in August it is dangerously cold, and storms can blow up quickly. Black bears and moose live here. A short stop of a few hours gives you a beach walk and a viewpoint from the highway; a night or two of camping is better value; the Coastal Trail is a multi-day backpacking trip for prepared people only. Wawa is the nearest town and Sault Ste. Marie is about two and a half hours away. Confirm park fees and permits.
Large wilderness park on the Lake Superior shore along the Trans-Canada Highway north of Sault Ste. Marie, about 160 km of rocky shoreline, cliffs, beaches and inland lakes, with a visitor centre at Agawa Bay, Wawa, Ontario, Canada
The park is a highway corridor and a wilderness area, so it never has gates that close, but its services are seasonal. The Agawa Bay visitor centre and campgrounds are usually staffed from late spring through early autumn, with reduced or no services in winter. Exact days and hours change from year to year, so confirm with Ontario Parks before you travel. Day visitors normally need a daily vehicle permit and campers pay for a site; check the current rules. Backcountry camping needs a permit and, in practice, planning ahead. Highway 17 stays open year round but winter driving can be hard, with snow squalls off the lake. Fuel and food are in Wawa and Sault Ste. Marie.
