Lake Tahoe
Lake · South Lake Tahoe, California
Lake Tahoe is a huge, very deep alpine lake in the Sierra Nevada, sitting at over 6,000 feet and shared between California and Nevada. It is about 22 miles long and 12 miles wide, among the deepest lakes in the United States, and the water is cold and clear enough that the bottom shows in shallow coves. The lake works in all four seasons: swimming, paddling and boating in summer, skiing at Heavenly and the other resorts in winter, and quieter shoulder seasons in between. The south shore around South Lake Tahoe is busy, with casinos just over the state line; the north shore towns are calmer and more residential. Emerald Bay and Sand Harbor are the postcard spots and fill early. Be honest with yourself about three things: the water stays cold even in August, summer parking and weekend traffic are hard, and winter storms can close roads or require chains. Allow a long weekend at minimum, and confirm beach fees, tour seasons and road conditions before you go.

The lake itself is open all year and has no gate or closing time. What opens and closes is everything around it: state park beaches and day-use areas commonly charge for parking in the warm months and may be gated or lightly serviced in winter, the Vikingsholm house at Emerald Bay runs summer tours only (confirm dates), and boat launches, inspection stations and rental shops mostly work from late spring to early autumn. Ski resorts open when snow allows, usually late autumn to spring, with lifts running from about morning to mid afternoon - confirm each resort's hours. Highway 89 around Emerald Bay can close for snow or rockfall, so check the state transport road report before you drive in winter.
