Lake Wister State Park
Oklahoma State Park On Lake Wister, Impounded 1949 On The Poteau River; CCC Built Park Areas · Wister, Oklahoma
A park of about 3,400 acres wrapped around Lake Wister in the Poteau River valley of south-eastern Oklahoma, where the Ouachita Mountains rise on both sides. The Civilian Conservation Corps built the original park in the 1930s, and the stonework and the Quarry Island area still show it; the lake itself came in 1949 when the Corps of Engineers dammed the Poteau for flood control and water supply. Because the Ouachitas catch more rain than anywhere else in the state, the country here is green and steep by Oklahoma standards, with pine and hardwood ridges, and autumn colour arrives in late October. The park has fifteen cabins, several campgrounds, a water spray park, a 6.4-mile trail, ramps and 115 miles of shoreline on the 7,300-acre lake, with golden and bald eagles wintering here, and Talimena National Scenic Byway begins twenty minutes south at Talihina.
