Lamington National Park
A Rainforest Plateau On The Queensland New South Wales Border, Reached From Canungra, With A Renowned Treetop Canopy Walkway And More Bird Species Recorded Than Almost Anywhere Else In The Country · Canungra, Queensland
Lamington National Park covers a rainforest plateau on the Queensland-New South Wales border in the Gold Coast hinterland, reached from the town of Canungra. The park splits into two main visitor areas a long drive apart: Green Mountains, built around the O'Reilly's family's guesthouse and famous for a suspended treetop canopy walkway through the rainforest; and Binna Burra, a quieter historic lodge area on the park's eastern side. Both sections sit inside cool, mist-prone subtropical and temperate rainforest that holds ancient Antarctic beech trees, some individual specimens well over a thousand years old, alongside one of the richest concentrations of bird species recorded anywhere in Australia. Walking tracks range from short strolls to Elabana Falls to full-day circuits through Toolona Creek and along the Border Track linking the two sections, 21 kilometres apart on foot. O'Reilly's is also known for hand-feeding wild king parrots and crimson rosellas and for guided night walks to see glow worms.

The park itself is open daily, generally sunrise to sunset, with no entry fee to walk its tracks. The Green Mountains and Binna Burra visitor and information centres typically open around 9am to 4pm or 5pm daily, though exact hours shift with season and staffing, so confirm the current day's hours before a long drive up. O'Reilly's guesthouse facilities, including wildlife feeding sessions and guided walks, run on a published daily timetable that visitors should check on arrival. Some walking tracks close temporarily after storm damage, bushfire recovery work, or heavy rain that makes sections unsafe underfoot - this has included extended closures around Binna Burra following past bushfire damage, so a call ahead to confirm which tracks are currently open is worthwhile rather than assumed.
