Lan Su Chinese Garden

Chinese Garden · Portland, Oregon

A walled Suzhou-style garden filling a full city block of Portland's Old Town Chinatown, built in 1999-2000 by artisans from Suzhou using materials shipped from China - the tiles, the rock, the timber and the craftsmen all came from there. It is a scholar's garden rather than a botanical one: the point is the composition of rock, water, plants and architecture seen through framed openings, and the whole 40,000 square feet is designed to feel much larger than it is.

239 Northwest Everett Street, Portland, Oregon, 97209, United States

Open daily year round with seasonal hours, generally late morning to late afternoon, closed on a small number of holidays. A modest admission applies with reductions, and members enter free; it rarely sells out. The Tower of Cosmic Reflections tea house keeps its own hours and charges separately. ⚠ THERE IS NO ON-SITE CAR PARK - the garden occupies a full city block in Old Town Chinatown and visitors use street parking, a nearby garage or public transport. The covered walkways mean the garden works properly in rain.
