Land Between the Lakes National Recreation Area

National Recreation Area · Golden Pond, Kentucky

A forty-mile peninsula of forest held between Kentucky Lake and Lake Barkley, two enormous impoundments of the Tennessee and Cumberland rivers, running from western Kentucky down into Tennessee. Around 170,000 acres are managed by the Forest Service as a recreation area rather than a national forest, with no towns inside it — the communities that were there were bought out and removed when the lakes were made. It holds a free-roaming bison and elk range, a planetarium, a working 1850s farm and several hundred miles of shoreline.
