Langeland
Long, Quiet Island South East Of Funen With Tranekaer Castle, A Cold War Fort You Can Go Inside, Wild Horses On The Southern Headland And Beaches On Both Coasts · Rudkobing, Region of Southern Denmark
Langeland is a long, narrow island of roughly 50 km south-east of Funen, joined to it by bridges via Tasinge and Svendborg, and linked to Lolland by ferry. It is quiet, rural and slow: rolling fields, manor estates, small harbours and beaches on both coasts, with the old market town of Rudkobing on the west side as its centre. People come for the space and a handful of distinctive sights: Tranekaer, a red castle in the middle of the island with a sculpture park in its grounds; Langelandsfort, a Cold War coastal fort near Bagenkop where you can go inside bunkers and see a submarine and other military hardware; the southern headland of cliffs and grassland around Gulstav and Dovns Klint, where a herd of wild-living horses is said to graze; and some of the best sandy beaches in south Denmark, such as Ristinge. Birdwatchers come in autumn for the migration over the southern tip. The honest caveat: public transport is thin, many sights are seasonal, and the island is a place to slow down rather than a list of big attractions.
