Langshan (Mount Lang)

UNESCO World Heritage Site As Part Of China Danxia; National Scenic Area And Global Geopark In Xinning County, Hunan · Xinning, Hunan

Langshan in southern Hunan is one of the six sites inscribed together in 2010 as China Danxia, the red sandstone country that erodes into towers, arches and sheer-sided pillars, and it is generally reckoned the most complete example of the landform anywhere - geologists call it the museum of Danxia. The peaks have names that tell you what they look like: Camel, Chili Pepper, the Elephant Trunk, a natural arch of red rock standing out over the river with a pine growing from the top of it. What people actually talk about afterwards is a crevice. Tianyi Xiang, the One Line Sky, is a fissure running about two hundred metres between two rock faces, and at its narrowest point the gap is roughly thirty centimetres. You go through it sideways, scraping, with a strip of daylight far overhead, and there is no way round once you are committed. Not everyone fits, and not everyone should try.

Xinning County, Shaoyang, Xinning, Hunan, China

Open daily year round, generally around 8:00-17:30 with shorter winter hours and last entry well before closing. Through-ticket at the main gate covers the principal scenic areas; THE INTERNAL SHUTTLE IS USUALLY COMPULSORY AND CHARGED SEPARATELY, as are the Bajiaozhai cableway and the Fuyi River rafting, which is seasonal and suspended after heavy rain. TIANYI XIANG, THE ONE LINE SKY, MAY BE CLOSED IN WET WEATHER and is dangerous when crowded.
