Lanikai Beach
Beach · Kailua, Hawaii
A half-mile strip of beach in Kaʻōhao, a community in the town of Kailua on the windward coast of Oahu, consistently ranked among the best beaches in the world. The name Lanikai is widely believed to mean heavenly sea; it does not. It is a grammatical error, since in Hawaiian the qualifier follows the noun, and it was invented in the 1920s by a developer named Charles Frazier who owned three hundred acres of beachfront here. The Hawaiian name for the place is Kaʻōhao.
