A Good Companion To Hierapolis, With Fewer Visitors And More Shade Among The Ruins · Denizli, Denizli

Laodicea on the Lycus is a large ruined city on a low plateau about 6 km north of Denizli and a short drive from the better known Hierapolis at Pamukkale. Founded in the Hellenistic period and grown rich in Roman times from wool, banking and trade, it was one of the leading cities of the region. Visitors walk along a long colonnaded street, past the remains of two theatres, a stadium, a large water tower, a nymphaeum, a temple and the foundations of churches. One church here is traditionally listed among the Seven Churches of Revelation (confirm). Excavation and restoration have gone on for many years and have brought columns back to their feet and paving to the streets (confirm the works). The site is spread across a wide area, with shade only in small patches, and crowds are light compared with Hierapolis. It makes a good second stop for anyone who wants to see how a Roman city in Phrygia was laid out.

The site is usually open daily, from about 08:30 to 19:00 in summer and to about 17:00 in winter (confirm), with the last entry about an hour before closing. The ticket office stands at the entrance, and a combined ticket with Hierapolis may exist (confirm). Some areas may be fenced for excavation or restoration, and the stadium or the theatres may be closed at times. The paths are exposed to the sun, so opening time and the last two hours before closing are the best for walking. Confirm hours, closing days and the open areas on the day, and ask at the gate which monuments you can enter.
