Las Tunas and Playa Covarrubias
A Long Undeveloped North Coast Beach With An Offshore Reef, In The Province That Calls Itself The Capital Of Sculpture And Holds Cuba'S National Festival Of Country Music · Las Tunas, Las Tunas
Las Tunas is the province almost everybody drives through on the way between Camaguey and Holguin, and it knows it. The city has responded by covering itself in sculpture - more than a hundred pieces around the streets and the Fuente de las Antillas on its edge - and by hosting the Jornada Cucalambeana each summer, the national festival of the decima and of punto, the improvised sung poetry of the Cuban countryside that UNESCO listed as Intangible Cultural Heritage in 2017. It is named for a nineteenth-century local poet and it is the real thing rather than a show for visitors. The other reason to stop is an hour north: Playa Covarrubias, a long white beach with a reef a few hundred metres offshore, one small hotel, and nobody else on it. The honest offer in this province is that and the festival, rather than any list of sights - which is also why a foreign visitor here is still unusual enough to be greeted rather than sold to, and why it makes a far better overnight stop than the drive between Camaguey and Holguin suggests.
