Laura Plantation

National Register Of Historic Places · Vacherie, Louisiana

A brightly painted Creole plantation house at Vacherie, five minutes from Oak Alley and a world away from it in the telling. Laura is interpreted from a document — a memoir written in 1936 by Laura Locoul Gore, who grew up here, lost and rediscovered in 1993 — which means the account is specific, first-hand and often uncomfortable rather than generalised. Sugar was made here by enslaved people for four generations, several of the plantation's owners were women, and the Br'er Rabbit stories were first written down from people held on this land.

2247 Louisiana Highway 18, Vacherie, Louisiana, 70090, United States
