Laurel Caverns
Show Cave · Farmington, Pennsylvania
The largest cave in Pennsylvania, running for miles of surveyed passage inside Chestnut Ridge above the Youghiogheny, and unlike almost every other show cave in the eastern United States it has almost no formations. It is a sandstone-capped maze of high narrow fissures cut by water along the joints in the rock, which means the appeal is the shape of the place rather than stalactites — and which is why it offers, alongside the ordinary lit walking tour, genuine caving trips where you are given a helmet and lamp and sent off the paved route.
