Lauterbrunnen is a narrow glacial valley in the Bernese Oberland, about 800 m above sea level, with sheer limestone cliffs rising up to roughly 1,000 m on both sides and 72 waterfalls that drop from them. The village sits on the valley floor, a 20 minute train ride from Interlaken Ost. The Staubbach Falls (297 m) fall beside the church, and the Trummelbach Falls run inside the mountain. Lifts and trains climb from here to Wengen, Murren, Gimmelwald and the Schilthorn, with the Eiger, Monch and Jungfrau above. Some say it inspired Tolkien's Rivendell. The honest picture is a small, beautiful, pricey place that is crowded in July and August, where rain hides the cliffs. Two nights is the right stay, and the valley floor is flat and easy. Most of the best views cost nothing, because the falls, the meadows and the river paths are FREE, while the lifts and the Schilthorn are where the money goes. Go on a clear morning, book rooms early, and keep a rain plan ready for the Trummelbach Falls and the museums nearby.
