Lava Hot Springs

Spring Town · Lava Hot Springs, Idaho

A town of three hundred and fifty-eight people on the Portneuf River in south-east Idaho, built around mineral springs that the federal government granted to the State of Idaho in 1902. The pools are run by the Lava Hot Springs Foundation, a state agency created in 1969, which makes these public hot springs rather than a private spa - five outdoor soaking pools fed by more than two and a half million gallons a day at 102 to 112 degrees Fahrenheit. The water carries minerals but no sulphur, so it does not smell, which is not true of most hot springs anywhere.

⚠ THE HOT POOLS ARE OPEN YEAR ROUND, which is the opposite of what most visitors assume, and winter is arguably the best time to be in them. They are operated by the LAVA HOT SPRINGS FOUNDATION, a State of Idaho agency - a walk-up, pay-at-the-gate facility with no reservation needed, with towel hire, lockers, changing rooms and showers on site. ⚠ THE OLYMPIC SWIMMING COMPLEX FOUR BLOCKS WEST IS A SEPARATE FACILITY WITH A SEPARATE ADMISSION AND ITS OWN SEASON - a combination ticket is generally available and is worth asking for. SWIMWEAR IS REQUIRED IN ALL POOLS. River tubing is hired from operators in town and is summer only. ⚠ This is NOT an Idaho state park and it does not appear on the state parks site; the Foundation is a separate agency.
