Lawrencetown Beach
A Famous Surf Beach Near Halifax With A Long Sandy And Cobble Strand, Consistent Atlantic Swells, Surf Schools, A Lifeguard Season, Dune Trails And A Lagoon. The Main Surf Spot In Nova Scotia, Used All Year By Wetsuit Surfers · Lawrencetown, Nova Scotia
Lawrencetown Beach is the best-known surf beach in Nova Scotia, a long sweep of sand and cobble on the Eastern Shore of Halifax Regional Municipality, about 25 km east of Dartmouth along Highway 207. Atlantic swells roll in almost all year, and surfers in thick wetsuits share the water with paddle boarders, kite flyers and walkers. Behind the strand lie dunes, a freshwater lagoon and a salt marsh, with a boardwalk and short trails that make the park a good outing even for people who never touch a board. Surf schools and rental shops operate near the beach in summer, and lifeguards watch the swimming area for part of the season. The park lies within a short drive of Halifax, so it fills quickly on hot weekends, but winter brings a different crowd of hardy surfers and storm watchers. The long beach, wide sky and steady waves give it a feel far from the city, though dining and groceries are only a few minutes away along the Marine Drive.

The beach is open at any hour and has no gate, but the services follow a summer pattern. Lifeguards are usually on duty from roughly early July to late August, about mid-morning to late afternoon - confirm dates with the province. Washrooms, change rooms and the picnic area are open roughly late May to mid-October, with surf schools and rental shops operating about 9 to 6 in peak weeks. Outside that season the sand stays open and surfers use it all year, but washrooms may be locked and no guards are on duty, so confirm services before a winter or early spring visit.
