Legend Rock State Petroglyph Site

State Petroglyph Site; National Register Of Historic Places · Thermopolis, Wyoming

A sandstone cliff along Cottonwood Creek north-west of Thermopolis carved with hundreds of petroglyphs made over thousands of years — animals, human figures and spirit beings. A visitor centre and a short trail along the base of the cliff open the site to the public in season, and it is one of the most important rock-art sites on the northern Plains. The panels are fragile: look, but never touch. It lies about 30 miles north-west of Thermopolis off WY 120, on a gravel road. The petroglyphs include Dinwoody-style figures and some of the oldest dated rock art in the region, with carvings added over thousands of years. A small visitor centre explains the styles and dates, and the site is managed from Hot Springs State Park.
