Lejre Land of Legends

Experimental Archaeology Park Founded In 1964 Where Reconstructed Stone Age, Iron Age And Viking Settlements Are Lived In By Families In Summer, Near The Royal Viking Age Hall Site Of Lejre · Lejre, Region Zealand

Lejre Land of Legends - Sagnlandet Lejre in Danish - is an open-air experimental archaeology park in the rolling farmland west of Roskilde, founded in 1964 as a research centre where archaeologists tested how prehistoric people actually built, farmed, cooked and lived. Across roughly 40 hectares of forest, lakes and meadows stand reconstructed settlements from different ages - a Stone Age hunter camp, an Iron Age village, Viking-age buildings and a farm cottage of the 1800s - and in the summer holiday families move into some of them and live as their ancestors did, cooking over fires in homespun clothes. Visitors wander from era to era, paddle dugout canoes, grind grain, make fire and meet old breeds of sheep, pigs and cattle. The name comes from Lejre's place in legend as the seat of the early Danish Skjoldung kings. The honest caveat: it is seasonal, roughly spring to autumn, much of the experience depends on summer staff and families being present, and the royal hall site and museum at Gammel Lejre are a separate place a few km away - confirm it is open.

Seasonal: Sagnlandet usually opens from roughly late April or May to October, with daily opening and the most activities in the Danish school summer holiday (late June to early August), shorter hours and some weekday closures in spring and autumn, extra days in the autumn school holiday (week 42) and closed in winter apart from occasional events - confirm the current calendar and last entry. From Copenhagen it is about 40-50 minutes by car, or a train to Roskilde and on to Lejre station, then roughly 2-3 km by local bus, taxi or on foot - confirm routes. Tickets can usually be bought on the day; groups and school visits must book ahead.
