Les Cheneaux Islands

Archipelago · Cedarville, Michigan

Thirty-six islands strung along the northern Lake Huron shore near Cedarville and Hessel, whose French name simply means the channels. Those channels are the point: they shelter the water so thoroughly that this is the calmest paddling in the Great Lakes, and the same shelter is why the area became a century-old summer colony of wooden boats and boathouses.
