Levi
Finland'S Largest Ski Resort, In Finnish Lapland, Host Of An Alpine Skiing World Cup Slalom Each November · Kittila, Lapland
Levi is Finland's largest ski resort, built around a fell in Finnish Lapland about 170 kilometres north of the Arctic Circle, and it is one of the main places international visitors come for a Lapland winter. The skiing is gentle by Alpine standards, on a rounded hill rather than a mountain, but the season is long, from late autumn to May, the snow is reliable, and the slopes are floodlit through the dark winter months. Every November Levi hosts an alpine skiing World Cup slalom, often the first of the European season. Around the ski area grows a compact village of hotels, cabins and restaurants, and everything Lapland offers in winter is here: husky and reindeer safaris, snowmobiles, cross-country skiing on hundreds of kilometres of tracks, glass-roofed cabins for the northern lights, and ice fishing. In summer it becomes a base for hiking, fell running and the midnight sun. Kittila airport, a short transfer away, has direct winter flights from many European cities. December is dark and costly; March brings long bright days on deep snow.
