Levi & Catharine Coffin House State Historic Site

Historic House · Fountain City, Indiana

An 1839 Federal-style brick house in Fountain City, Wayne County, where the Quaker couple Levi and Catharine Coffin sheltered freedom seekers escaping slavery for two decades. Roughly two thousand people are believed to have passed through, and the house was known in the movement as the Grand Central Station of the Underground Railroad. It is a National Historic Landmark, and a purpose-built interpretive centre opened next to it in 2016 to carry the interpretation the house itself cannot.

201 U.S. 27 North, Fountain City, Indiana, 47341, United States

Open on a limited seasonal state historic site schedule, generally Tuesday to Saturday in the warmer months with reduced or no winter operation. The house is seen by guided tour only, departing from the interpretive centre. Confirm current days before travelling.
