Lewis and Clark Caverns State Park
Montana State Park · Whitehall, Montana
Montana's first state park, on a limestone hillside above the Jefferson River between Butte and Bozeman, holding one of the larger decorated caves in the northwest. The tour is not a stroll along a lit walkway: it starts with a three-quarter-mile uphill climb outside just to reach the entrance, then goes down through six hundred steps, some low passages and a final exit down a natural rock slide. Lewis and Clark passed within a few miles in 1805 and never knew it was there — the name is a piece of promotional licence from the 1930s.
25 Lewis and Clark Caverns Road, Whitehall, Montana, 59759, United States
Seasonal. Cave tours run on timed departures roughly May to September, with a short candlelight tour programme in December that sells out. THERE ARE NO REGULAR TOURS FROM ROUGHLY OCTOBER TO APRIL, when the cave is closed to protect hibernating bats. A Montana state park vehicle fee is required to enter the park, with the tour charged separately on top. The park grounds, trails and campground are open year round.
