Liberty State Park

Subnational Park · Jersey City, New Jersey

Twelve hundred acres of reclaimed rail yard and landfill on the Jersey City waterfront, facing the Statue of Liberty across half a mile of water — and THE BEST VIEW OF THE MANHATTAN SKYLINE FROM ANY PUBLIC GROUND, because you are looking at it side-on from across the Hudson rather than standing inside it. THE CENTRAL RAILROAD OF NEW JERSEY TERMINAL stands at its northern end: about ten million immigrants who cleared Ellis Island walked off the ferry and onto a train in that shed, which makes it the point where the United States actually began for a large share of the country. The park opened in 1976 on ground nobody wanted.

200 Morris Pesin Drive, Jersey City, New Jersey, 07305, United States

FREE, with FREE PARKING, open daily from early morning until well into the evening with seasonal variation; the interior salt marsh and interpretive areas keep shorter daytime hours and some sections remain closed for remediation. The CRRNJ Terminal keeps its own daytime hours. THE FERRY TO LIBERTY ISLAND AND ELLIS ISLAND IS A SEPARATE COMMERCIAL OPERATION (Statue Cruises) with timed tickets booked online — crown access sells out months ahead, and dogs are refused at the gangway. Swimming is not permitted anywhere in the park.
