A Quiet And Beautiful Park Close To Downtown Vancouver, With No Camping Or Fires · West Vancouver, British Columbia

Lighthouse Park is a 75 ha forest and rock headland at Point Atkinson on the west side of Howe Sound in West Vancouver, about 15 km north-west of downtown Vancouver, reached from Marine Drive by Beacon Lane (confirm distance). Old-growth Douglas fir, some more than 500 years old, shades the trails (confirm), and smooth sloping granite outcrops run down to the sea, where views open across the Strait of Georgia to the Gulf Islands and, on clear days, the Vancouver skyline. The Point Atkinson Lighthouse, first lit in the 1870s and rebuilt in 1912, still guides ships into Burrard Inlet (confirm dates). Arbutus trees with peeling red bark cling to the bluffs, and a network of trails of a few kilometres reaches Juniper Point and Eagle Point. The park is a Metro Vancouver regional park with no camping, no fires and limited parking, and it is free to enter, so it suits a quick visit or a slow afternoon (confirm).

Lighthouse Park is open for day use every day of the year, generally from dawn to dusk, and the car park follows the same hours, so check the posted times before you leave a car (confirm exact hours with Metro Vancouver). There is no staffed gate, and the lot often fills on sunny weekends, when drivers circle or park along Marine Drive. The lighthouse buildings are not open to visitors, and the grounds around them may be fenced. Daylight is long in June and short in December, and fog can close in on any season.
