Lime Kiln Point State Park

Subnational Park · Friday Harbor, Washington

Forty-two acres on the west shore of San Juan Island, widely described as one of the best places in the world to watch wild orca from dry land. The seabed drops away steeply just offshore, which brings whales in unusually close - close enough that people on the rocks have had them surface within twenty feet. The 1919 lighthouse doubles as a whale research station, and the lime kilns the park is named for are still standing in the woods behind it.

1567 Westside Road, Friday Harbor, Washington, 98250, United States

Park open year round, 8 AM to dusk. The interpretive centre and the lighthouse keep seasonal hours, generally late spring through early autumn, staffed partly by volunteers. A Discover Pass is required to park, and the car park is small and fills on summer afternoons. Reaching the park requires a Washington State Ferries crossing to Friday Harbor.
