Lincoln Center for the Performing Arts

Concert Hall · New York, New York

Sixteen acres of travertine and glass on the Upper West Side, built from 1962 on the cleared San Juan Hill neighbourhood — a slum-clearance project that displaced some seven thousand mostly Black and Puerto Rican families, and which the institution now acknowledges openly. It is the largest performing arts complex in the world by most counts, with eleven resident organisations including the Metropolitan Opera, the New York Philharmonic and New York City Ballet.
