Lincoln Road
Landmark Street · Miami Beach, Florida
Carl Fisher built it in the 1920s as the Fifth Avenue of the South, and by 1960 it was dying — so the city hired Morris Lapidus, the architect of the Fontainebleau, to close it to cars and rebuild it as a pedestrian promenade. He gave it shade structures, fountains and free-standing follies, and it became one of the earliest and most successful pedestrian malls in America.
