Lincoln's New Salem State Historic Site

Heritage Village · Petersburg, Illinois

A reconstruction of the frontier village on the Sangamon River where Abraham Lincoln spent his twenties — he arrived in 1831 as a drifting labourer of twenty-two and left in 1837 as a lawyer and a state legislator. The original settlement was dead within a decade of his departure; what stands now is a set of log buildings rebuilt on the original foundations by the Civilian Conservation Corps in the 1930s, with exactly one original structure among them.

15588 History Lane, Petersburg, Illinois, 62675, United States
