Linderhof Palace
UNESCO World Heritage Site: The Palaces Of King Ludwig II Of Bavaria (Inscribed 12 July 2025); The Only One Of His Palaces He Finished And Actually Lived In, With The Venus Grotto, The Moorish Kiosk And A Terraced Garden · Ettal, Bavaria
Linderhof is the smallest of Ludwig II's palaces and the only one he finished and actually lived in, which is the whole point of it. It stands alone in the Graswang valley west of Ettal, a single-storey villa of 1870-78 built for one man who dined by himself, surrounded by terraced gardens, a cascade, a fountain and a scatter of follies: the Venus Grotto with its artificial stalactites, coloured lighting and wave machine; the Moorish Kiosk with its peacock throne; Hunding's Hut and the Hermitage out in the woods. The famous detail is the dining table winched up through the floor from the kitchen below so that no servant need be seen. Inscribed by UNESCO on 12 July 2025 with Neuschwanstein, Herrenchiemsee and Schachen, it is far quieter than Neuschwanstein, far smaller, and reached by an infrequent bus from Oberammergau or Garmisch-Partenkirchen. There is nothing else in the valley. It suits anyone who found Neuschwanstein a queue and wants the same obsession at a scale you can actually feel.

The palace is open all year, daily, with shorter afternoon hours in winter and a short closing around the turn of the year - confirm. Entry to the palace itself is by guided tour at a set time printed on your ticket; tours run in German and English with audio devices for other languages. The park and its paths are open free all year in daylight. The outbuildings are seasonal: the Moorish Kiosk, Hunding's Hut and the Hermitage normally open roughly mid-April to mid-October and are shut all winter. The Venus Grotto has been under long restoration, so confirm whether the grotto is open before you count on it. The terrace fountain and cascade run only in the warm months, at set times through the day, and are switched off from autumn to spring - confirm.
