Litchfield National Park
The Top End'S Easiest Access Waterfall Park, A Two Hour Drive From Darwin, With Swimming Holes Below Florence, Wangi And Tolmer Falls And Termite Built Magnetic Mounds Aligned North South Across Its Plains · Batchelor, Northern Territory
Litchfield is the Top End's easy day trip from Darwin, a sandstone plateau park reached in about two hours via the small town of Batchelor, built around a run of waterfalls rather than one single sight. Florence Falls drops into a swimming hole ringed by monsoon rainforest, Wangi Falls is the most popular and easiest to reach by sealed road, and Buley Rockhole's stepped rock pools let you move pool to pool like a natural water park. Tolmer Falls is viewing-only from a platform, protecting a cave system of rare bat species below. The park's magnetic termite mounds, flat wedge-shaped structures up to two metres tall, align themselves north-south to regulate their internal temperature across the day, a quirk visible from a short boardwalk near the entrance road. Crocodile safety genuinely varies pool to pool here - rangers test and sign the main swimming holes, but not every waterhole in the park is checked, and that distinction matters more than in almost any other park in Australia. It is smaller and easier than Kakadu to its east, and deliberately so.
A plateau park a two-hour drive south of Darwin via Batchelor, holding Florence, Wangi and Tolmer Falls, Batchelor, Northern Territory, Australia
Litchfield National Park has no gate and is open every day, around the clock, though the access road from Batchelor is sealed and best driven in daylight. The main swimming holes - Wangi Falls, Florence Falls and Buley Rockhole - are checked by rangers for crocodiles on a regular basis and are closed immediately, with signage posted, if one is found; always read the current signage at the car park before entering any water, since conditions change through the season. The Wangi Falls kiosk and visitor information keep standard daytime hours. The park, including some swimming holes and the 4WD tracks, can close completely during the wet season from roughly November to April when roads flood. There is no public transport into the park; a car or tour bus from Darwin is the only way in.
