Little Missouri National Grassland
Public Land · Bismarck, North Dakota
At 1,028,051 acres, the largest national grassland in the United States - a million acres of badlands, buttes and mixed-grass prairie spread across the western edge of North Dakota, with Theodore Roosevelt National Park sitting as an enclave inside it. It is public land in the plainest sense: grazed, drilled, hunted, ridden and camped on, with almost no gates and very few signs. The Maah Daah Hey Trail runs 144 miles through it.
2000 Miriam Circle, Bismarck, North Dakota, 58501, United States
FREE and open 24 hours a day, year round, across 1,028,051 acres. There are no gates, no entrance stations and nothing to book; dispersed camping is permitted almost anywhere at no charge. ⚠ UNPAVED ROADS ARE THE LIMITING FACTOR, not hours - badlands clay is impassable within minutes of rain and forest roads are not winter maintained. Developed campgrounds along the Maah Daah Hey Trail are seasonal and charge a small fee. The Dakota Prairie Grasslands supervisor's office in Bismarck administers this grassland from about 250 miles away; ring rather than call in.
