Little Missouri State Park

Subnational Park · Killdeer, North Dakota

More than six thousand acres of badlands above the Little Missouri River north of Killdeer, most of it reachable only on horseback or on foot. It is the least developed of North Dakota's state parks and the most spectacular - a maze of buttes, coulees and clay walls with about forty-five miles of trail through it, a campground with horse corrals, and almost no other infrastructure at all. Riders come from several states for it and the park exists largely for them.

910 103rd Avenue NW, Killdeer, North Dakota, 58640, United States

⚠ SEASONAL - generally open from mid-May to mid-September and unstaffed outside that period. A per-vehicle North Dakota state park entry fee applies and the campground and horse corrals are reservable through the state park system, with corral sites going early for the riding season. There is no visitor centre, no shop and no water on the trails. ⚠ THE TRAILS ARE IMPASSABLE WHEN WET - badlands clay becomes unusable within minutes of rain, for horses and walkers alike. Killdeer, about 20 minutes away, is the nearest fuel and food.
