Main Street Town On The Ammonoosuc River, Gateway To The Northern White Mountains; Birthplace Of Eleanor H. Porter, Author Of Pollyanna, With A Pollyanna Statue By The Library, And Home Of Chutters, Long Cited For One Of The World'S Longest Candy Counters. · Littleton, New Hampshire

A lively small town in the northern White Mountains, strung along a long Main Street above the Ammonoosuc River where I-93 comes out of the mountains. Littleton grew as a mill and railroad town, and its brick and clapboard blocks still hold independent shops, bookstores, galleries, diners and a historic inn rather than chain stores. It is the birthplace of Eleanor H. Porter, author of the 1913 novel Pollyanna, and a bronze statue of the always-glad girl stands outside the public library, with the town marking a Glad Day each year. Chutters, a candy store on Main Street, has long been cited for one of the longest candy counters in the world, lined with jars of penny candy. Behind the shops a riverwalk follows the Ammonoosuc to a covered footbridge and an old grist mill beside the falls. Littleton is a practical base for the northern mountains, with groceries, gas and hospitals that small villages lack, and Franconia Notch and Bethlehem are a short drive away. It is busiest in foliage season and quiet on winter weekdays.

Restaurants and the brewery keep their own hours, and a few close for a week or two in the April and November mud seasons.
