The only rural town in America built by Chinese immigrants for Chinese immigrants. After a fire destroyed the Chinese quarter of nearby Walnut Grove in 1915, the residents leased land here — they could not own it under the Alien Land Law — and built their own town on the Sacramento Delta levee. It is a National Historic Landmark District and around eighty people still live in it.
