Lockhart

Heritage District · Lockhart, Texas

A county seat half an hour south of Austin that the Texas Legislature formally named the Barbecue Capital of Texas, and which has the smokehouses to justify it — Kreuz Market, Black's, Smitty's and Chisholm Trail within a few blocks of a florid 1893 courthouse. People drive here from three states to eat brisket off butcher paper and drive home again.

110 South Main Street, Lockhart, Texas, 78644, United States

The town and the square are free to walk. ⚠ THE BARBECUE HOUSES COOK A FIXED AMOUNT AND SELL UNTIL IT IS GONE — go late morning to early afternoon, and expect brisket to run out first. Individual smokehouse hours and prices are not stated here; they sell by weight and prices move. Weekends bring Austin and the queues to match.
