Loess Bluffs National Wildlife Refuge
Wildlife Reserve · Mound City, Missouri
Seven and a half thousand acres of marsh, pool and wet prairie against the loess bluffs on the eastern edge of the Missouri River floodplain, established by Franklin Roosevelt in 1935 and known until recently as Squaw Creek. It is a chokepoint on the Central Flyway, and in the migration weeks the numbers stop being ordinary: in February 2013 more than a million snow geese were counted here at once, and as many as 475 bald eagles have been recorded in a single winter.
