London Bridge
The 1831 London Bridge, Rebuilt In Arizona 1968 1971 · Lake Havasu City, Arizona
The London Bridge of 1831, which crossed the River Thames for more than a century, bought by the chainsaw entrepreneur Robert McCulloch in 1968 when it was sinking, taken apart stone by stone, shipped to California through the Panama Canal and trucked into the Arizona desert, where it was rebuilt over a concrete core and dedicated in 1971. It now spans a channel cut to make an island in Lake Havasu, the reservoir on the Colorado River behind Parker Dam. It is free to walk and drive across, lit at night and busiest during boating season and spring break. The story that McCulloch thought he was buying Tower Bridge is a popular myth.
