Long Island Wine Country

Wine Region · Cutchogue, New York

The NORTH FORK of Long Island, where Louisa and Alex Hargrave planted vinifera on a potato farm in 1973 and were told it would not work. There are now roughly sixty producers on the two forks, the maritime climate is closer to Bordeaux than to anywhere else in the eastern United States, and MERLOT AND CABERNET FRANC are what the region does best — which makes it a red-wine region on an island most people associate with beaches.

Main Road, Route 25, Cutchogue, New York, 11935, United States

The region is open and free to drive through, with no gate. ⚠ INDIVIDUAL WINERIES KEEP THEIR OWN HOURS AND MANY NOW REQUIRE RESERVATIONS, particularly at weekends and through harvest — this is the main practical difference from the Finger Lakes. ⚠ SEVERAL PRODUCERS DECLINE LIMOUSINE AND PARTY-BUS GROUPS. Many small producers reduce to weekend hours or close from roughly January to April. Harvest and peak season run late September through October. ⚠ NOT VERIFIED FOR THIS FILE — check individual wineries before travelling.
