Long Point Provincial Park

A Long Sandy Peninsula Park On Lake Erie With A UNESCO Biosphere Reserve Around It, A Beach, Dunes, Marshes, A Campground And A World Famous Bird Migration Spot For Ducks, Hawks And Songbirds. A Major Spring And Autumn Birding Area With Warm Shallow Waters · Port Rowan, Ontario

Long Point Provincial Park occupies the base of Long Point, a sand spit that curves about 40 km into Lake Erie from the north shore, reached from Port Rowan in Norfolk County, roughly 70 km south of Brantford (confirm distances). The point and its marshes form a UNESCO biosphere reserve and one of the great bird migration crossroads of North America, with tens of thousands of ducks, hawks, warblers and tundra swans passing through each spring and autumn (confirm figures). The park itself gives a long sandy beach on warm shallow water, dunes, marsh boardwalks, a campground and a visitor centre in the quiet southern Ontario countryside, a long way from highway noise. It is a place for swimming in July, for binoculars in May and for monarch butterflies in September, so each season has its own reason to go. A vehicle permit is needed for day use, and camping is reserved through Ontario Parks (confirm all prices and dates).

Long Point is mainly a summer park, with the gate, beach and campground generally running from about mid May to mid October and the visitor centre from late June to Labour Day, so confirm dates with Ontario Parks before travelling. The gate is staffed in the daytime, and campers follow arrival and departure times set by the reservation system (confirm). Spring and autumn bring the best birding, with some services reduced, and winter is quiet, with trails open for walking and the road sometimes closed to vehicles.
