Longji Rice Terraces
Longji Terraced Fields Scenic Area; Part Of A Globally Important Agricultural Heritage System (Rice Terraces Of Southern China) · Guilin, Guangxi
Mountainsides sculpted into thousands of rice terraces that coil like the scales of a dragon's back - the meaning of Longji - in Longsheng County, about two hours north of Guilin. Zhuang and Yao farmers began carving them centuries ago, and the terraces climb from the valley floors to well over 800 metres, still farmed by hand. Two areas draw visitors: Ping'an, a Zhuang village of wooden stilt houses beside the famous Seven Stars with Moon and Nine Dragons and Five Tigers viewpoints, and the higher Jinkeng terraces around the Red Yao villages of Dazhai and Tiantouzhai, with a cable car to Golden Buddha Peak. The terraces change with the seasons: water-filled mirrors in spring, green in summer, gold at the autumn harvest, and occasionally white with frost. Red Yao women famous for their very long hair live nearby.
