Longue Vue House and Gardens
National Historic Landmark · New Orleans, Louisiana
A Classical Revival house on eight acres at the edge of New Orleans, built between 1939 and 1942 for Edgar Stern and Edith Rosenwald Stern — Sears money on her side, cotton brokerage on his — and given away complete, with the furniture and the archive, as a museum. The gardens were designed by Ellen Biddle Shipman, the most significant American woman landscape architect of her generation, who also did the interiors. The Spanish Court, with its canal of jets, was modelled on the Generalife at the Alhambra and is the reason to come.
