Lookout Mountain Incline Railway

National Register Of Historic Places · Chattanooga, Tennessee

A funicular railway opened in 1895 that climbs a mile up the side of Lookout Mountain from the St. Elmo neighbourhood of Chattanooga to the brow at the top, reaching a grade of nearly seventy-three per cent in its final stretch — one of the steepest passenger railways anywhere. The cars have glass roofs for that reason. It was built to carry visitors to the hotels on the mountain and it still does the same job, arriving a short walk from Point Park and the Civil War battlefield above the city.
