Loon Mountain Resort

Ski Resort Opened In 1966 On Loon Mountain, Operating Largely Within The White Mountain National Forest Under A Forest Service Special Use Permit, With A Summer And Autumn Gondola To The Summit And A Glacial Caves Walk. · Lincoln, New Hampshire

One of the largest and busiest ski resorts in New Hampshire, spread across three connected peaks above the East Branch of the Pemigewasset River on the edge of Lincoln, two miles from Interstate 93. It opened in 1966, founded by a group led by former New Hampshire governor Sherman Adams, and most of its terrain lies on White Mountain National Forest land under a Forest Service permit. In winter it offers a wide spread of groomed intermediate cruisers, steeper runs and glades on South Peak, several terrain parks and a gondola from the base to the summit, and it is the quickest big resort to reach from Boston on a single highway. From late spring to the foliage season the gondola keeps running for sightseers, and a short walk from the summit leads to the glacial caves, a boardwalk trail through boulder caves and crevices left by the last ice age, with ladders and tight squeezes for those who want them. The state's best-known scenic drive begins at its door, and Lincoln's condos, motels and restaurants make it an easy base for the whole western White Mountains.
