Los Cabos and El Arco

Destino TuríStico / Land'S End · Cabo San Lucas, Baja California Sur

The end of the Baja peninsula, where 1,700 kilometres of desert run out and the Pacific meets the Sea of Cortez at a granite arch standing in the water. El Arco is land's end in the literal sense - the last rock of the peninsula, with sea lions hauled out at its base and two beaches on either side of the point, one calm and one that kills swimmers. Around it Los Cabos is two towns joined by a 33 km corridor of resorts: Cabo San Lucas, loud and built around a marina, and San Jose del Cabo, a quieter colonial town with an art district and a Thursday evening gallery walk. Humpback whales pass from December to April, and cardon cactus grows down to the sand. It is also expensive, touristy and aggressively sold: expect timeshare touts, marked-up taxis and crowded Medano Beach, and plan the quieter bays, the early boat and the Pacific warnings carefully. Fly into San Jose del Cabo airport, about 35 minutes from the marina.
