Los Roques Archipelago
A National Park Since 1972, Venezuela'S Best Known Caribbean Destination: A Coral Atoll Of Roughly 350 Cays And Islets Around A Shallow Lagoon, Reached By Small Plane From The Mainland, With White Sand Beaches And Clear Water That Draw Sailors And Divers Internationally · Gran Roque, Dependencias Federales
Los Roques is a coral atoll of roughly 350 islets and cays scattered around a shallow turquoise lagoon in the Caribbean Sea, reached by a short flight from the mainland rather than any ferry or road. Gran Roque, the only inhabited island, holds the archipelago's single small town, its sandy streets lined with simple guesthouses called posadas rather than large resorts, which gives the whole place a genuinely low-key character compared to more developed Caribbean destinations. From there, small boats run visitors out to the other cays for the day - Francisqui, Crasqui, Madrisqui and dozens more - each a stretch of white sand and clear shallow water with little or no permanent structure on them at all. Los Roques has been a national park since 1972, and the protection has kept most of the archipelago undeveloped, which is both the appeal and the reason facilities beyond Gran Roque itself remain genuinely minimal.
A coral atoll of some 350 islets and cays in the Caribbean Sea, roughly 160 km north of the mainland coast, with Gran Roque as the only inhabited island and main point of arrival, Gran Roque, Dependencias Federales, Venezuela
There is no gate and no fixed hours for the islands themselves, which are reached by boat from Gran Roque through the day. Flights from Caracas or Maracay to Gran Roque's small airstrip run on a schedule that has been inconsistent in recent years; confirm current operators and frequency before booking rather than assuming a daily service. Posadas on Gran Roque keep ordinary check-in hours and most include boat excursions to the outer cays as part of the stay. There is no commercial infrastructure on the outer cays themselves beyond what a boat operator or posada brings out for a day visit.
